A MONUMENT IN STONE

A MONUMENT IN STONE

A monument in stone
To a forgotten man
He must have done brave deeds
To save both church and land
Or did he find life on Mars
A million not-yet stars
Deep in the dark far-off
Maybe a brilliant surgeon
With knife and firmest hand
An epic writer pen in hand
A politician knowing what
Is best for his fellow man
Or did he do something subtle
Quiet. A poet not of letters
But in his own plain life
He loved a woman
He loved a child
Both gone before their time
And his brave deed?
Memory without regret
Love no matter what
Satisfaction with his lot
